The fruit for this wine was grown at the Schobers Road Vineyard located west of the Auburn township. The fruit was sourced from two blocks with east-west row orientation. The deep red clay loam over limestone of this vineyard set the Riesling vines up well with strong, even canopies.
As is often the case, the vintage was shaped by weather events well in advance of the ripening period. This year a dry spring and heatwave during berry development reduced yields and generally ‘knocked’ the vines around. Vines on deeper soils with a good water supply faired a lot better and were able to go onto ripening with an even and functioning canopy. As for the ripening period, it was near on perfect with clear mild to hot days and little rain.
With the utmost attention to the selection of a harvest date, the grapes were all picked between midnight and 8am when the temperatures were at their coolest. Crushing and pressing of the chilled fruit occurred immediately with the aim of achieving the quickest separation of juice from the skins with minimum complication or physical harm to the skins. A generous pressings cut was made and only the free-run was used for this wine. A neutral efficient yeast was selected for the fermentation of clean juice and fermentation was very controlled at cool temperatures. Anaerobic winemaking occurred after fermentation prior to the bottling in May 2018.

The 2018 Regional Riesling displays bright fragrant aromas of freshly squeezed lime juice, lemongrass and wet slate. The palate shows fruit concentration well supported by clean acidity. An approachable wine that is focused on fruit expression. The wine is best enjoyed in its youth but will further reward with 3-5 years of bottle age.
