Additional Information
Vineyard

The fruit for this wine was sourced from the WSS vineyard in the Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley. The vines were plated in the 1970’s and grown on deep red clay loam over limestone soils with pockets of slate and row orientation east to west to maximise daily sunlight. The vineyard is 350 metres above sea level.

Growing Conditions

The 2017 season was shaped by heavy spring rains which continued into the start of summer, making this one of the latest vintages for over a decade. These rains provided a fuller, satiated soil profile leading to large vine growth and consequent fruit shading. Thankfully the autumn period was remarkably dry allowing ripening to proceed without disease pressure. The overall result was good yields, distinctly varietal purity of flavour and elegant structures.

Winemaking

2017 was an exceptional year for Watervale Riesling with cooler ripening conditions allowing ample natural acidity to come from the vineyard. This fruit was hand-picked and gently pressed, using only the finest free-run juice. Fermenting at cool temperatures allowed us to create a delicate, floral wine. The wine was fermented dry, slightly fined, filtered and bottled.

Winemaking Notes

This 2017 Watervale Riesling has vibrant orange blossom and fresh lemon juice aromas. The palate is elegant and refined, with freshness coming from the intense citrus fruits and mineral texture. The lingering finish is well balanced with crunchy natural acidity.  This is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but will gain complexity over a couple years of cellaring.
