VINEYARD
The Olssen family’s Bass Hill vineyard on Tank Road, Auburn, at the southern end of the Clare Valley. The vines were planted in a north south orientation on red clay loam over limestone soils at 370 metres above sea level. The grapes were picked in March.
GROWING CONDITIONS
The 2006 growing season in Clare was widely considered to be near perfect. Good winter and spring rains were followed by mild weather until January when temperatures soared. A cooler than usual February followed bringing vine growth and fruit ripening back into balance with a warm March concluding an excellent vintage.
WINEMAKING
The grapes were fermented in open-top fermenters with daily pump-overs and regular drain and returns to maximise the extraction of colour, flavour and tannins from the skins. The grapes were then pressed off skins and the wine transferred to new and second use French oak barriques for eighteen months barrel maturation, including several rackings.
WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTES
A vibrant deep red in the glass, this wine shows the classic Clare Cabernet characters of blackcurrant and crushed violets on the nose with enticing cedary notes. The palate features sweet berry and plum fruit with well-integrated oak framed by elegant tannins. Although drinking well now, this is a wine that will benefit from cellaring for up to ten years.
